Je ziet ze vliegen!
In het voorjaar en tijdens de zomer zie je ze vliegen in Sevilla. „El cernícalo primilla“, de kleine torenvalk, zo heten de zeldzame vogels die rondom de Giralda, de toren van de kathedraal, cirkelen. De grootste gothische kathedraal ter wereld is ook de grootste nestkast voor roofvogels van deze planeet. Overal op het gebouw zijn nesten van het kleine neefje of nichtje van de gewone torenvalk. Het bovendak is hun onderdak geworden.
De zeer zeldzame valkensoort komt alleen in het zuiden van Europa en in Africa voor en tot aan de 20e eeuw kon je ze nog overal in Spanje in de lucht zien hangen, het zogenaamde „bidden“ . Nu staat de Primilla op de lijst van bedreigde diersoorten en kom je ´m bijna nergens meer tegen, behalve in Sevilla. Daar bevindt zich de grootste kolonie van Europa op het dak van de Santa María de la Sede, want er zijn zóveel hoeken en gaten tussen de luchtbogen , steunberen en pinakels, dat een kleine valk met broedse gevoelens de verleiding niet kan weerstaan om juist dáár het nest te maken.
Er is nóg een reden waarom de kleine torenvalk op die plek nog stand gehouden heeft. ´s Avonds wordt de Giraldatoren verlicht en dat trekt insekten aan. Daar komen vleermuizen en vogels op af en… je raadt het al: de torenvalken kunnen hun avondmaal zó uit de lucht plukken, het eten komt naar ze toe.
Na zonsondergang is het een heel spektakel. De fraai verlichte moorse toren met haar bakstenen decoraties en tientallen zwevende valken die af en toe snel met de vleugels klappen en schrille kreten slaken, waarmee ze het bloed in de kleine vogeladertjes van hun potentiële slachtoffers doen stollen.
Op 5 juni , de Internationale Dag van het Milieu, zet een vereniging voor vogelaars hier en daar telescopische verrekijkers neer, zodat voorbijgangers de valken goed kunnen zien. Je kunt op andere dagen de Giraldatoren beklimmen en vanuit de hoogte op de vogels neerkijken. In vogelgidsen worden ze trouwens altijd afgebeeld met de toren, het grootste restaurant ter wereld voor torenvalken.
Het is een mooi voorbeeld van simbiose. De valken zijn blij met het middeleeuwse bouwwerk en de uitvinding van Edison en de kathedraal is tevreden met de extra trekpleister, want bezoekers brengen geld in het laatje en daarmee kunnen zij de grootste nestkast ter wereld weer in stand houden.
